\nI stared at him.

\nSilence.
\nI stepped closer.

\nHis eyes met mine.
\nAnd what I saw there frightened me more than anything he had said all night.

\nI stared at Zane.
\n\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d
\n\u201cA credit facility.\u201d
\nMy stomach tightened.
\n\u201cIn my name?\u201d
\n\u201cPartially.\u201d
\n\u201cHow much?\u201d
\nThere was a pause.
\nThen she said the number.
\nI stopped breathing.
\n\u201cSay that again.\u201d
\n\u201cFour hundred and eighty thousand dollars.\u201d
\nZane closed his eyes.
\nMy attorney continued.
\n\u201cAnd that may not be the total exposure.\u201d
\nI looked down at the papers in my hand.
\nThe affair suddenly felt like the smallest betrayal in the room.

\nI stared at the statement on top of the pile.
\nThe account number ended in 4419.
\nSomeone had left these documents on my doorstep minutes after Zane\u2019s parents drove away.
\nSomeone knew.
\nSomeone wanted me to know.
\nI looked toward the dark street outside.
\nThen back at my husband.

\nZane shook his head.
\n\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d
\nBut he looked terrified.<\/p>\n

And for the first time since he told me about his girlfriend, I believed him.
\nMy attorney was still speaking.

\nMy grip tightened around the phone.

\nAnother pause.

\nI looked at the clock.

\nHis parents had still been standing inside my house.
\nI slowly turned toward Zane.
\nHis face went blank.
\nThen my attorney said something that made every hair on my arms rise.
\n\u201cThe access came from inside your home.\u201d
\nI looked toward the hallway.
\nZane followed my gaze.
\nNeither of us moved.
\nBecause his parents had left.
\nMadison had left.
\nAnd as far as I knew, Zane and I were the only people remaining in the house.
\nThen we heard it.
\nA floorboard creaked upstairs.
\nZane whispered, \u201cDid you invite someone?\u201d
